Joy Smiley Zabala, Ed.D, is an independent consultant who also currently serves as the Director of Technical Assistance at CAST. She has been a leader in the use of assistive technology (AT) to improve education and life for people with disabilities for more than three decades.

As a general educator, special educator, teacher trainer, and conference speaker, Dr. Zabala has earned international recognition for her work on Assistive and Accessible Technologies, Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) and Universal Design for Learning. Dr. Zabala is the developer of the SETT Framework and a co-founder and author of Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services.

In this lecture, you will learn about:

  • why engaging students, families, educators, and others in a collaborative selection, acquisition, and use of assistive technology devices and services matters,
  • guiding principles of assistive and accessible technologies,
  • the four elements of the SETT Framework and the order in which they are addressed,
  • how to use the four elements of the SETT Framework to build shared understanding and improve solution-seeking by all involved in decision-making about materials and technologies,
  • tips for what to do when you don’t know what to do,
  • lessons learned from students, families, and others.
